Oatlands Past Pupils Union was reactivated earlier last year to re-establish a link between the school and it's former pupils. The college will celebrate it's 50th anniversary in 2001 and that prompted a number of former students and the Principal, Michael Madiagan, to get together and decide that the timing was right to re-launch the PPU.

Sean Donnely (Leaving Certificate class of 1961) was unanimously chosen as President at a meeting in Glenalbyn and John Murphy (1967) was nominated as secretary. Both have since put in big effort into getting the PPU up and running, assisted by a committee including, Kevin King (1958), Jimmy Doyle and Declan Kernan (1969), Stephen Collins (1968), Brian Mooney (1972), Pat Lamb (1975), Donal Cawley and Donal O' Donoghue (1988), Justin Coen (1989), Eoghan Heneghan (1990) and College Principal, Michael Madigan.

The first objective of the committee was to establish a database with the names and current addresses of all former pupils. A network, involving at least one person from every year since the first Leaving Certificate class in 1956, was put together and that proved to be invaluable in getting the necessary information. Some years were easier to pin down than others but a substantial database is now in existence with current addresses for about 1,500 of the 3,500 school past pupils.

Having assembled a preliminary list the committee decided that social event was appropriate to to bring people together and a barbecue was organised last June which proved to be a great success. This was followed by a golf outing on 18 September and both events will now become a fixed part of the PPU calendar.

As well as organising its own events the PPU is actively encouraging class reunions and will provide information from it's database for any of the year-groups who wish to organise their own events. Class reunions at 5/10/15/21/25/30 years after leaving Oatlands are now a regular feature for some year-groups and the PPU will assist those who want help to get such class reunions going. The PPU would like to keep its database up to date and would welcome information about changes of address. The last meeting of the committee decided that an annual meeting of all the year representatives would help to co-oridnate activities.

Membership of the PPU for 1999/2000 is now open for a £10 annual subscription. Former pupils who have left school in the past three years have afree membership. All members will be kept informed of events being organised by the PPU and will receive a newsletter at regular intervals to keep them in touch with news and events.
